Hi I am dentist from Perth, Australia. I have been researching since few days, how to effectively communicate to new patient hygiene appointment
Typical scenario:
New patient: I am here for check up and cleans, no concerns, no pain or discomfort, missing 2 teeth, 4 5 surface amalgam fillings,15 years old, crack lines evident. Pt perception no pain or discomfort, so eveything is fine
Dentist: at least $15,000 worth treatment (2 implants,2 crowns,hygiene
My question: how do we convert this pt to optimal treatment?
What questions to be asked?
How do we make them realise that they got potential problems? And in next 10 years things will get even worse? May be irreversible damage!
What are the steps involved.
Any good books recommendations?
Any specialised communications skilled required?
Help please!!

i have seen many such patients at first visit and my basic advice is to do your clinical exam and make sure you document any problems you see. Hopefully some can be "watched" and that gives you the chance to let the patient know that eventually that problem will need to be addressed. Other more serious problems you should document but let the patient know if he or she 'gambles' on not correcting the problem now it is their option but letting them know what the later events may produce. The basic psychology is to understand the patient, let them know you will continue to monitor them but get the oral care necessary both in your office and at home...once the patient has confidence built up about you then restorative dentistry will be easier for the patient to understand
Books? My textbook, Esthetics in Dentistry, has several good chapters on the subject and the new 3rd edition will be out in middle 2018 by Wiley. also I have just submitted a series that deals with this and should be out by the end of the year hopefully.
